It is pretty rare to find a millennial who has chosen to become a legal assistant or a legal secretary. Normally, I see millennial lawyers; however, legal secretary is an underestimated job for sure. With that said, I wanted to give young professionals a glimpse into the day in the life of a legal secretary.
6:00 am – Wake Up!
Lately, I have no clue why but we have been waking up around 6:00-7:00 am naturally.
7:00 am – But, First Coffee
I make our coffee and we hop on a video call with my husband’s family.
8:00 am – Tidy Up
Normally, I wash the dishes from when we had coffee and depending on the day I put a load of laundry.
9:00 am – Time for Work
My day varies but what is constant is that I support four attorneys. My tasks include:
Opening Matters/Conflict Searches
Coordinating the Scheduling of Depositions
Docketing/Calendaring
File/Document Management
e-Filing Documents to the Courts
Transcribing Documents
Processing Reimbursements
This definitely doesn’t include everything, since tasks come up randomly: however, as a legal secretary my tasks are more admin-heavy as opposed to a Paralegal whose tasks are more immersed in the field of law.
10:30 am – Snack Break
Snacks vary but we try to have some sort of a fruit combo. Our recent favorite has been bananas with cashews.
12:00 pm – Lunch Time
Our meals vary day by day but at around noon, I start preparing what we will have for lunch. My break is an hour so that gives me enough time to make the meal, consume it, and clean up afterwards. Make sure to check out my post on meals that I make during the week.
5:30 pm – Done with Work
I finish work at 5:30 at which point we plan what we are going to do for the rest of the evening. 9 out of 10 times I hop straight onto social media and try to catch up on what I missed throughout the day. I get lost in the world of TikTok videos until I get abruptly shaken by my husband who tells me “no more TikTok”. We then either go for a walk, watch a movie, or just catch up with one another until dinner time.
7:00 pm – Light Dinner
Normally, we have a light dinner because we have a heavier lunch. Then, I wash the dishes and tidy up any mess around the apartment.
10:30 pm – Lights Out
I am such an early sleeper, so around this time my eyes get smaller: shortly after I am knocked out for the night.
I hope this gave you a perspective of what a day in the life of a legal secretary is like. Let me know if you are curious to see more of what it’s like for a non-lawyer in the legal field.
Do you think that I always read legal thrillers because I love the genre and therefore I was amused and interested in reading this diary of yours!
Interesting read. A lot of times I wish I had become a lawyer because there are so many injustices in this world, but I became a teacher instead and now a blogger. It’s good that you are letting people see what it is like in a profession they may not have considered before.
This was fun to read. It’s interesting to know about how each day goes in the life of a legal secretary. Nice one.
