The leaves are falling and the temperatures are dropping. We even had our first flurry moment Thanksgiving weekend here in the Northeast. These are all signs for us to be dusting off our winter coats and putting away our favorite fall jackets. Now, I am not an expert but I am a girl from Hawaii who has been living in the Northeast for a little over two years now so I figured out some of the best winter coats to wear in frigid temperatures.
Duck Down Coat
One of the first things I discovered is that duck down and feather filled coats are the best to keep you warm, dry and feel almost none of the cold. Now, I know some prefer a coat with a down alternative fill so you can opt for a polyester filling, just something with a thick filling in the inside of the coat which will block out the cold air.
Wool Coat
Some say that wool coats are itchy, but if you are wearing the correct under pieces you won’t feel the wool on your skin and it doubles as a classic piece over workwear. The one I am wearing in the picture below is the J.Crew Factory City Coat. This is more of an investment piece but one that I find quite worth it because when I was commuting in to the city it went with all my work outfits and kept me warm.
Parka
Peacoat’s and wool coats are great, but when you live in a place with real winter — aka frigid temperatures, brisk winds and snow — you need a practical warm coat that will keep you comfortable and cozy on the coldest of days. That is where the parka comes into play. Personally, I find more warmth from the down coat but this does a great job as well.
Puffer
Now, this is an option for those slightly warmer winter days. I wouldn’t count on this keeping you completely warm but when it’s not below freezing this definitely does the job.
What no one tells you is you should be wearing what’s known as a base layer when the temperatures are below 40’s. When you pair anyone of these winter coats with a base layer, sweaters, and accessories there’s no getting through to you. Let me know if the comments below if you live somewhere cold and what your best coats to wear in the winter are. I’d love to know and expand my knowledge and list!
I know I wear my puffer coat all the time it is so versatile and packs away easy to keep in my car since it has a carry case.
I’m living on a tropical island where it’s hot. However, I can still feel the comfort, coziness, and warmth of the coats!
Winter here is not as bad compare to northern states. I love pea coat for stylish look but use puffers for colder days.
