I have been living out of two luggages for the past year now, so as spring crept in, I had to do a reshuffle. Goodbye thick winter coats and hello white denim and pastels! I realized that I had somewhat adopting the ‘capsule wardrobe’ system that everyone has been raving about, so here is my take on 10 Essentials for a Capsule Wardrobe.
Despite this stark wardrobe change, there have been a few rotating pieces that I have been gravitating towards through all four seasons. With this inspiration, I have created a list of 10 essential capsule wardrobe items. This list is created based on what has worked for me in this year abroad and based on my personal style.
- White T-Shirt: It is no shock that the white T-Shirt is number one on the list. A good white T-Shirt is everyone’s best friend. You can dress it up or down depending on how you style it. Chuck on a blazer and you have yourself a business casual outfit or pair it with your favorite trainers for a casual look.
- Striped T-Shirt: A striped T-Shirt just screams Parisian style. You cannot go wrong with a nice striped shirt as it elevates just about any outfit. There are a bunch of striped styles, but black and white is a timeless go-to.
- Chambray: A double-edged sword depending on the fit of your purchase. Personally, I go for a more boyfriend fit, in order to wear it open over my T-Shirts or tie it around my waist for a more casual look. The most classic style is tucking it into a pair of black jeans. Or if you are brave enough dabble on the denim-on-denim trend.
- Button Up: You can never go wrong with this ageless button-up piece. Best way to get your hands on one is to stifle through your boyfriends closet; he is bound to have the perfect crisp cotton blend, which is best for your business casual outfits.
- Sweaters: The winter staple. This was a piece I was lacking in my closet when I arrived but quickly realized how pivotal it is; I picked up the two basic sweater colors, beige and black, leaving me with a plethora of outfit options. Chugging this over my button up I created a neat-layered look.
- Black Dress: Coco Chanel didn’t tagline the infamous ‘little black dress’ motto for no reason. LBD is the pinnacle of versatility. Be it in a casual jersey style or a cheeky Gucci dress like the one Posh Spice would wear, a black dress is an absolute staple in your capsule wardrobe.
- Blue Jeans: Wondering what to pair with your T-Shirts, Button-Ups, and Sweaters? Blue Jeans! Select from a wide variety of styles and cuts based on your taste. Personally, I prefer mom jeans for a bibliophile look and a more breathable blue jegging option.
- Black Jeans: Who doesn’t love a decent pair of good quality black jeans? This is the fashion-forward piece that goes with your textured sweaters or your printed pieces. Wear it during the day with your slouchy tee or dress it up with your Button-Ups for a mid-week meeting.
- Grey Cardigan: As the weather slightly warmed up I found myself gravitating towards my cardigans more often than not. Cardigans are one of those pieces that can finely dance on the lines of old lady and cute. Clearly, I lean with the latter opinion, as a nice salt and pepper Grey Cardigan is an absolute staple in my wardrobe. No matter what outfit you are wearing if you throw on a cardigan, it can either elevate it or demote it, all based on the silhouette you chose.
- Army Green Jacket: Countless outerwear options, yet I go for this one. A subtle pop of color does some justice in this essentials list; however, this is a piece that pairs well with all of the items listed above. Imagine the Striped T-Shirt and Blue Jeans with this jacket layered, or a jersey Black Dress with this tied around your waist. No matter how you style it, an Army Green Jacket is essential for the autumn and spring seasons.
Whether you are about to embark on a year-long journey or just start your own personal capsule wardrobe, I hope this helped you find some inspiration. For more information on how to build a capsule wardrobe check out the link.
