Mikel Coffee Company – “Maybe it’s knowledge entering life”
Introduction to this Elixir of Life
If you haven’t heard of a Freddo espresso or a Freddo cappuccino, you’ve been living under a rock!
These espresso-base beverages first came about by pure Greek improvisation, but now they are a way of life in Greece, and no summer day is complete without them.
There are a few different coffee chains operating in Athens that make these delicious drinks, but our personal favorite is the unbelievably smooth, spectacularly rich, cream-topped Freddo cappuccino of Mikel Coffee Company.
Along with their amazing coffee is their great customer service. Even though almost every morning we are the only foreigners in the coffee shop, we still feel part of the community.
This service even goes beyond the shops with their Social Media Management, that constantly engages with their Mikel Coffee fanatics.
Starbucks’ Little Greek Problem
Mikel is a Greek coffee chain whose network consists of more than 200 stores around the world. From its first intercontinental launch in the United Arab Emirates making its way around the world to Cyprus, the United Kingdom, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bulgaria, and the United States, it is no wonder Starbucks has a New Greek competitor.
Before Mikel, Starbucks didn’t have many competitors, allowing them to expand tremendously. But now this Greek coffee company may give Starbucks a run for its buck. In a desperate attempt to keep up Starbucks added the Freddo cappuccino onto their menu describing it as “a slightly sweetened espresso coffee with cold milk foam on top.”
Starbucks is hoping these innovations would boost sales and win over customers, but I don’t think the company can withstand the ongoing craft coffee competition.
The Addition Begins
Every day spent in Athens is ignited with Mikel coffee; it has become such an addiction that I wake up thinking about Mikel coffee and I go to sleep thinking about Mikel coffee. Some days one cup isn’t enough so we conclude our evenings with another round of their coffee.
The best thing is that this addiction doesn’t break our bank cause most of their coffee is priced at around 2 euros, which is unbeatable, especially in comparison to a $6 Starbucks drink that has lost its touch after expansion.
It is worth pointing out that consuming this every day may not be a healthy habit, but it is just that irresistible. I also want to mention notable runner ups that we tried in Athens. There was Coffee Lab, Cafe Veneti, Coffee Island, and Cafe Melina.
A Mikel Fanatic
Yes, we consumed a lot of caffeine in our ten days in Greece, but coffee, especially Mikel Coffee, is the elixir of life.
People say they have coffee withdrawals and it is understandable as we now have Mikel withdrawals. The addiction is at its prime as we began to do research on how feasible a Mikel Coffee Company Franchise would be. A true Mikel Fanatic!
