Over the weekend we went to Washington DC. This was the first time since my 2017 internship that I’ve been back to DC so I was very excited. However, this was also the first time we took a bus from New York Penn Station to another State. It was overall a good experience and definitely something we plan to do again. While this trip is still fresh in my mind I want to share how we spent a weekend in Washington D.C.:
Day One
The hotel we book was a few blocks from the White House so that was of course our first stop. Next to the the White House is the Eisenhower building and a little ways down you get to the Washington Monument. Along the way we also saw the U.S. Treasury and stopped at Zeke’s Coffee. Down the way from the Washington monument is the reflection pool along with the WWII, Korean, and Lincoln memorials. For the Washington Monument you can book in advanced and get a 360 view of D.C.
Day Two
For day two we took the metro from our hotel to the Eastern Market where we enjoyed some of the street vendors. We walked back from the Eastern Market to Capitol Hill where we stopped along the way at the Capitol Hill Book store. We then made our way to Capitol Hill where the U.S. Capitol is located, the Library of Congress, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Day Three
On day three we took the other side where we walked through the National Mall to the Washington Monument down towards the Jefferson Memorial which is located along the Tidal Basin. Walking around the Tidal Basin we got to the FDR memorial and the MLK memorial.
DC is filled with a lot of museums but my husband and brother in law are not too fond of museums. If I went with my brother I probably would have incorporated a lot more of the museums. If you enjoy museums check out this post on some of the best.
Just for perspective a lot of this was done by foot so we walked about 20K steps a day to do the above. We did however metro to the Eastern market as mentioned above. The metro is fairly small so it’s pretty simple to figure out especially for someone like me who is a little challenged when it comes to directions. The number one tip is to figure out which direction you are going and count how many stops to that point. You are probably wondering what we ate for food. Our hotel had breakfast included which covered us for a few hours but when we got hungry I had a few places I wanted to revisit. The number one spot I wanted to go to while there was Nando’s which we had for lunch on the third day. For a late lunch/dinner on the second day we went to this cute place called Busboys and Poets. And on the first day we kept it simple with some Potbelly sandwiches.
Washington DC is such an amazing spot to visit. I went for a week in high school and my trip was truly inspiring! You managed to fit so much sightseeing into one weekend! Thank you for sharing this great itinerary 🙂
I love Washington! And this guide is just great for anybody who wants to enjoy the city at its fullest. Thanks for sharing!
This looks like a great DC weekend itinerary – I’m excited to see it all in person one day.
I missed the Einstein statue the last time I was here! Washington is a fun city to explore for a weekend.
I’ve never been to Washington but is on my list! It’s good to know what everything we could do in three days. Thanks for sharing!
We spent a couple of days touring Washington, DC with our girls a couple of years ago. Thought it funny that when we told our oldest we were visiting “the Mall” that she had a completely different idea of what we would be doing. She might have been a little disappointed.
I lived in DC for 5 years and this post really made me miss it! It looks like you had a great trip and were able to see so many of the major sites. I love Eastern Market, and Busboys and Poets is one of my favorites!
