It is well-known that Lebanese people are resilient. I want to clarify this. Resilience is not some sort of quirk of their character, but rather a trait they had to adopt to endure the harsh realities of their country: foreign occupiers, homegrown relentless warlords, and pure utter governmental negligence. I want to erase the association of RESILIENCE with the Lebanese people from the global community, as there is a limit to everyone’s resiliency. Instead, I want you to recognize that the Lebanese people are not resilient, they are OPPRESSED and OCCUPIED.
This disaster killed at least 220 people, with new stories still surfacing. Injured at least 6,000, as the Lebanese people continue their lives with the injuries. It has left 300,000 homeless. I want to remind you that the entire country’s population is merely 7 million people, while New York City has more of a population of approximately 8 million. It is incredible how much was raised for the Beirut explosion.
In a statement, the United Nations said that Lebanon needs emergency aid worth $117 million to cope with the consequences of the Beirut port explosion. Along with that UNICEF estimates $8.2 million is necessary to support families and children.
Total Value of “Urgent Aid” Given to Lebanon:
Kuwait $41 million
France $35.1 million
Qatar $50 million
Germany $34.4 million
UK $26 million
European Commission $73.71 million
Australia $2 million
Totaling to almost $300 million
A major highlight for the groups around the world who came together for Lebanon raising thousands of dollars for on ground services. From NGO’s in Lebanon that are supporting families who need food, to those who are using all available resources to asses and repair destroyed homes and businesses.
More Than Money
Monetary need is obviously important, but we also want to highlight some of the countries who immediately responded.
Tunisia sent two aircrafts filled with food and medical supplies
Czech Republic sent 37 rescuers with sniffer dogs
Jordan sent a military field hospital with necessary personnel
France sent two places with 55 emergency workers, a mobile medical unit, 15 tons of aid, along with their President
Russia sent five aircrafts carrying 150 Russian personnel, in addition to a makeshift hospital and a lab for coronavirus
UAE is covering up to 1,000 trauma interventions and up to 1,000 surgical interventions
Germany sent a team of 47 search and rescue personnel
Greece sent a military transport plane with a search and rescue personnel
These are just SOME of the countries who provided assistance. The amount of global togetherness on this tragic event is astounding and simply beautiful. It is incredible to see how much was raised for the Beirut explosion. The people of Lebanon deserve more. They have been chanting and calling for accountability from the government for almost a year. The city has shattered and needless to say the public mood is anger and despair.
