Where can I get Lahmajun in New Jersey? This was the question that sparked it all for us. George Assadourian Middle East Lahmajun is the answer!
Living in the Levantine region, specifically in Lebanon, we are spoiled with the flavorful foods the Middle Eastern cuisine has to offer. It is most awful when traveling far away from the region and you find your taste buds longing for those flavors; yet struggling to fulfill them.
One of those tastes is that of the Armenian Lahmajun – a thin round piece of dough topped with meat, diced vegetables, and a set of herbs.
It is easier to find it on the West Coast, specifically in California, where there is a large Armenian population, but nearly impossible to find it on the East Coast. Or is it?
Sitting in New Jersey, craving that “Armenian Pizza”, I decided to perform an ambitious attempt of Googling nearby shops that might have it. And to my surprise, I found a hit not too far away from me, under the name of Middle East Lahmajun.
It seemed legit as it is preceded with the Armenian name of George Assadourian. I couldn’t believe that I had found myself an Armenian bakery, in close proximity, that makes authentic Lahmajun!
Soon thereafter, I was at the border of Cliffside Park and Fairview looking at an old-fashioned storefront. A sigh, followed by a walk into the store. Nothing on the inside too. Just a metal wall that has a tiny picture of St. Vartan and an opening so you can communicate what you want.
Don’t judge a book by its cover and don’t let that storefront fool you! It turns out that the bakery is one of the biggest producers of Lahmajun in the area. They are USDA approved, and have their products sold at many supermarkets and grocery stores – of course, in frozen form.
If you want hot Lahmajun then you have to come early, as they are baked at 8 AM and no longer available afternoon; however, you can always get yourself a pack of the cold ones and heat/bake them yourself at home.
Enjoying a quick trip back to the Middle East with the flavors of the Assadourian Lahmajun!
